american water well drilling
With the objective of accessing groundwater, water well drilling is the process of submerging a drill rig to create a hole in the ground. Historically, sharpened sticks and stones were used to manually drill a well. However, nowadays, mechanical drill rigs are employed, allowing for a competent driller or an owner who has the right tools to take charge of the digging.
The US Geological Survey reports an impressive 13 million private wells on American soil, of which 2 million are used for the consumption of drinking water. An additional million public water wells can also be found throughout the US, which illustrates just how vital water well drilling is for the US’s water supply.
The rain that falls from the sky and the snow that melts off the land travel through the earth, ultimately reaching an aquifer. An aquifer is an underground layer of permeable rock that allows water to flow through it. This water becomes groundwater, which is then collected in wells for use.
In the United States, most wells are not particularly deep – they are generally drilled to a maximum of 200 feet. The majority of underground aquifers are even shallower, lying within the first 100 feet below ground. But for certain locations, wells can be sunk down to depths of over a mile, where underground water supplies are notably more plentiful.
The well that is selected for a drill requires a delicate balance of factors– the depths of the well, the type of earth it is penetrating, and the liquid level within. At shallow depths, usually a hand-operated rig will successfully carry out the job; however, deeper wells call for a more powerful solution such as a mechanical or hydraulic apparatus.
With a hefty drill bit, the laborious drilling process commences by crafting a tunnel into the depths of the earth. A steel casing is then placed within the opening to safeguard it from crumbling inwards, while a fine-mesh filter is wedged at the foot of the shaft, preventing sand and foreign substances from infiltrating the aquifer.
Utilizing the water source, the driller pumps a steady flow into the cavity to eliminate the remnants of the drilling mud and remnants. The additional liquid helps to maintain the optimal temperature of the drill bit, discouraging any potential caving or structural damage to the hole.
Desiring to obtain a deeper well, the driller will slowly remove the drill pipe, referred to as the drill string, after reaching the intended depth. In doing so, a rapidly-rising column of water will be established in the well.
In order to draw water from the well, a driller must install a pumping system suitable for the depth and water level. The type of pump utilized could vary depending on these factors.
In shallower wells, a jet pump relying on water pressure may easily be used to draw the liquid up. However, for those located deeper down, a submersible pump is needed—one that is suspended from a cable and lowered into the depths of the well.
Once the pumping apparatus has been firmly installed, the well is primed to furnish water for whatever purpose may arise – whether it be for residents of the household or for agricultural irrigation.
