cable tool water well drilling
The ancient approach of water well drilling, referred to as “cable tool,” “percussion,” or “churn” drilling, was the only technique used until the mid-1800s. This primitive process is still used in vicinity around the globe, even though the developed rotary technique has gradually taken over.
With each powerful, hand-operated winch pull, the suspended drill bit erodes away at the ground beneath its feet. Chained to this bit is a reamer which increases the diameter of the hole as the process continues. Through this cable tool drilling method, the distinct hammering sound echoes through the earth to slowly create a large enough hole.
The drill bit is kept frosty through a continual river of H2O, while simultaneously flushing away the carved-up debris. To avoid blockages, a convenient bailer is lowered into the spot to gather the shavings before they have a chance to wedge themselves in.
As the excavation progresses, additional sections of ‘drill pipe’ pipe are affixed to the drill string – becoming heavier and heavier as it pushes the bit further into the earth.
Once the drilling has concluded at the pre-decided depth, a specially crafted “screen” is slowly brought into the gap. This screen has been designed with an impressive level of craftsmanship; having numerous tiny holes placed all throughout it. These holes let in water but carefully preserve it from any dirt or particles.
Upon the assembly of the casing, the borehole is fully developed and ready for deployment.
Being able to tackle almost any terrain, cable tool drilling is the perfect solution for those on a budget who need to bore into the earth. The process is lengthy and requires a lot of elbow grease, but the cost-effectiveness of this technology is what makes it an ideal choice for countries that are developing their resources.
