Colonel Charles Goodnight and John Chisum founded Del Rio, Texas back in 1881. This delightful city rests on the northern side of the Rio Grande and is also the county seat of Val Verde County. Enjoying a closeness to Ciudad Acua in Coahuila, Mexico, citizens can venture there with ease over the Ciudad Acua International Bridge. The mighty Rio Grande serves as the city’s western boundary and it was this incredible force of nature that birthed its name.

Del Rio boasts a semi-arid climate (Kppen BSh) with sizzling summer days and cool winter nights. Thermometer readings can vary from an average low of 40F in January to an average high of 100F in the peak of summer. If June 28, 1994 is any indication, you can expect the mercury to skyrocket as high as 112F. Subzeros have been known to occur, with January 23, 1985 registering a record low of 12F.

This base houses the 47th Flying Training Wing, a part of the Air Education and Training Command. What makes this particular wing so unique is that it trains pilots from all four of the United States’ military branches – Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force.

Perched on the wondrous Rio Grande sits Amistad Dam, a rock solid edifice made all the more beautiful by its dutiful responsibilities. Waters from the Rio Grande are ably collected and stored for utilization in its neighboring reservoir about 17 miles downstream from Del Rio. The dam and its accompanying reservoir are managed by a dual-nation agency of the US and Mexico: the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC).

Connecting the city to the beyond, the Del Rio International Airport offers routes to places far and wide.

For almost two hundred years, the hot springs of Del Rio have been offering their soothing tranquility to locals and visitors alike. Home to the Del Rio Civic Center, Whitehead Memorial Park has a lot to offer in the city – from the local library to an outdoor amphitheater. And, for those looking to take a journey through history, there’s the Whitehead Memorial Museum. This site was once the living quarters of Charles Goodnight, who founded the city.

Radiating out from Del Rio, cotton, wheat, corn, and sorghum act as the main dietary staples for the surrounding farms. Serving as a hub for livestock, hearty ranches grace the surrounding scenery, offering a visual reminder of the city’s agricultural abundance.

The financial dynamism of Del Rio has been buoyed by four contributing pockets of industry, including the military, agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. Being the larges source of employment in the city, Laughlin Air Force Base stands at the helm with the Amistad Dam and Reservoir following in close pursuit.

Situated within the city limits, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School and St. Stephen’s Episcopal School offer educational options for students ranging from kindergarten to twelfth grade. The former provides schooling to students in kindergarten through eighth grades, while the latter provides primary through high school level education.

Del Rio thrives as a dynamic hub of culture and diversity, in no small part due to the thriving Hispanic population. For many, the area is home. A few of the exemplary organizations supporting the community include the Del Rio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas, and League of United Latin American Citizens. The uniting factor among these organizations is their shared commitment to fostering a sense of community for individuals and families who bring vigor and vibrancy to the city.

Del Rio is endowed with a variety of radio and television broadcasting services. Chief among these establishments is KDRG, the main radio station that is known to air a Spanish-language format. Keeping in the same vein, KRDO-TV, the city’s major TV channel stands as an affiliate of ABC.

Every year, the people of Del Rio are provided with a host of memorable experiences, from the Val Verde County Fair to the Whitehead Memorial Museum’s Cowboy Days, to the St. Stephen’s Episcopal School’s Rodeo. All three of these events bring joy and entertainment to the entire town.
