Private wells remain the source of water for many people living in rural areas. While a few may use the option for convenience or cost-savings, the reality is that for some, these wells are essential. Unfortunately, not all being able to default to public water systems since in many rural locations they either don’t exist or don’t provide a reliable watering source.

Despite being necessary for those who lack access to other forms of water, drilling a private well is an expensive task. The National Ground Water Association claims that it typically costs around $3,000 to create such a well, and some may even be as expensive as $10,000.

The USDA offers a Residential Water Well Drill Grant to assist individuals with the cost of having their own water well drilled. Up to $4,000 in grants is available, which can go a long way in making private well drilling more manageable!

With the grant program, any person who inhabits a rural location and requires an individual water well may apply. There are no restrictions based on finances or other factors; the only stipulation is that the well must be meant for personal use.

To be considered for the grant, those interested in applying need to hand in an application to the USDA. This form must demonstrate a complete overview of what is planned for the well regarding its position, how far down it will go, and why it is being constructed.

Before submitting their application, applicants must submit a cost estimate for the project and provide evidence of their financial resources to cover the expenses. Upon receipt of the application, the USDA will assess it and make a determination of whether or not the requester qualifies for the grant.

Upon receiving the USDA’s seal of approval, the potential grantee will be alerted and bestowed a contract to authorize and execute. The contract unveils the specifics of the grant, inclusive of the grant sum and length of time allocated for project culmination.

Upon the formal acceptance of the grant invitation, the allowee is cleared to begin their well drilling operations. When the project comes to a close, an in-depth summary must be mailed to the USDA, including all of the costs associated with the job and details regarding the completed well.

Rural dwellers looking to tap into fresh water without straining their wallets can leverage the Residential Water Well Drill Grant to get the resources they need.
