In 1000 AD, the village of Dura in Iraq welcomed a groundbreaking feat: the world’s first-ever water well. Spearheaded by Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi, the undertaking was an ambitious venture – and had great repercussions for generations to come.

Al-Zahrawi, a renowned physician and scientist from Baghdad, made an everlasting contribution to the medical world with his treatise, ‘The Canon of Medicine’. Within its pages, Al-Zahrawi described the treatments he applied to fight off disease and improve people’s health.

He suggested a technique for obtaining water that involved piercing a whole into the earth and infiltrating a tube inside. This tube would be then be employed for drawing liquid up from the groundwater.

A distressed patient sought by Al-Zahrawi in hopes of a remedy, yet was instead given still waters drawn up from a nearby well – upon drinking, the illness dissipated, and the individual was fully restored to their original health.

Following this successful endeavor, Al-Zahrawi decided to spread his knowledge to other villages and communities. To this end, he embarked on a mission to drill even more wells and also to impart his skills to the locals so they would be able to propagate his methods.

Drilling the first water well was an essential milestone in history, proving that we could gain access to much-needed liquid through the ground. Consequently, it paved the way for the creation of numerous water acquisition methods, including but not limited to the digging of canals and construction of dams.
