how many water wells have been drilled in oregon
The Beaver State is home to an estimated 1,000 to 2,000 drilled wells, designed to supply a variety of needs. Ranging from the private and public spheres, a majority of these water sources are employed for irrigation; however, certain wells are used for domestic and business purposes.
An Oregonian milestone was set in 1856 when – close to the meandering Willamette River – the first water well was drilled and used for irrigation by an individual. Two years later, another noteworthy stepping stone arrived with the drilling of Portland’s first public water well for quenching the thirst of residents.
Oregon’s water well population has flourished since the 1800s, in part because of the state’s growing population and an increase in the demand for water. With 80% of Oregon’s water wells being attributed to irrigation, it is clear that this purpose is pervasive in the state.
In the past, the number of water wells dug was quite substantial; however, due to the elevated utilization of sources such as rivers and reservoirs to nourish crops, water reserves below ground have seen a decrease in attention. Water usage has become more stringently regulated by government, resulting in less groundwater requires for daily needs.
