how to measure water depth in drilled well

2023-06-11

When creating or using a drilled well, the level of water found within it is utterly essential in order to understand its capabilities and judge how much water can be withdrawn for use. To gain this insight, various approaches exist that measure the water depth within the well.

Measuring a well’s depth doesn’t have to be a challeng – the tried and true tape measure being the simplest and most popular way. Though, getting an exact reading may become tricky if the well is not completely linear. If greater accuracy is what you require, then a sounding line might be your best bet; though, it requires more effort.

A pressure sensor is the most precise tool for gauging water depths in a swift, straightforward manner. This tool grants us a precise estimation with minimal effort.

To measure how deep the water within a well is, employing a tape measure is the most accessible and straightforward approach. All one needs to do is drop the tool to the bottom of the well, making sure that it is in a straight line. Then, note down the number displayed on the tape measure to reveal the true depth of the water.

More accurate than the tape measure, however with a more lengthy process involves the sounding line technique. You’ll need the line and a weight, which you must secure to its end before descending the cord into the well.

As the sinker moves to the lower reaches of the well, take note of the point where the waterline reaches. Pull on your sounding line and the sinker, measuring carefully from the marked waterline to the weight dangling at its disconnected end. The total length of this line will reveal to you just how far the depths of the water extend.

Determining the depth of water can easily and swiftly be achieved with the use of a pressure sensor. All that is required is to affix the instrument at the end of a hose. This process yields highly precise results.

The tubing should be carefully lowered into the depths of the well until the pressure sensor is gently covered in liquid. Activate the pressure sensor and then note down the depth.

Gauging the depth of a well is a prerequisite for proper drilling and optimization. A range of techniques can be applied, including the use of a measuring tape, sounding line, or more sophisticated pressure detecting instruments.
