occurence of non aqeous phase liquids in drilling water well

2023-06-18

By boring into the ground, water well drilling effectively digs a portal for uncovering underground aquifers. A shaft is created after the hole is formed, allowing for retrieval of this precious resource via a pumping system. Occasionally, drilling may also ensue for the purpose of harvesting geothermal energy or venting steam.

In scarce patches of arid land, it’s oftentimes necessary to source natural water from below. Drilling through stone and sediment may thus be required, and the practice of tapping this hidden wellspring is known as water well drilling. Depending on the geological composition of the area, the depth for such a borehole can range from a few feet to several dazzling thousand feet – this work can be accomplished by either manual techniques or by employing specialized machinery.

Once the aquifer is unlocked by a drill, its liquid bounty is raised up with a pump. Afterwards, its contents are kept secure in a large reservoir or cistern.

At times, during water well drilling, a non-mixable liquid might be encountered. These are called Non-aqueous Phase Liquids (NAPLs) and may include oil, gasoline, and other hydrocarbons. NAPLs can penetrate the aquifer either from the bottom of the well shaft or from the surface area.

The creeping intrusion of NAPLs into water wells can present a serious hazard: they can impede the flow of water, causing decreased capacity, and also pollute the content, rendering it unfit for consumption.

If NAPLs are discovered in a water well, it is safer and more sensible to abandon the well and bore a new one. Removing the NAPLs from an existing well is feasible, but it requires considerable financial expense and effort.
