potable water well drilling fluids
During the drilling procedure, special fluids are implemented to exfiltrate drill cutting fragments, cool the drill bit, and provide lubrication to the drill string. The kind of fluids selected is dictated by the type of drilling being executed. Currently, there are three main categories of drilling fluids available: water-based, oil-based, and air-based.
A combination of water and clay serves as the basis for most of the drilling fluids. The impact of the clay component is essential, as it helps to prevent cuttings from accumulating within the drill bit. From abrasive freshwater environments to the salt of the sea, water-based drilling fluids are apt to work their magic.
An amalgamation of oil and clay gives birth to oil-based drilling fluids, which are applied in fresh water and salt water drilling operations to suppress clogging of the bits by suspending the cuttings.
Mixing air and clay, a special sort of drilling fluid is created to keep the cuttings suspended — and far from clogging the drill bit. Such air-based drill fluids have uses in both freshwater and saltwater drilling sites.
Drilling wells for potable water requires special attention to ensure that the well does not become polluted. To that end, the best option is to utilize a water-based drilling fluid. Its clay composition works to filter any hazardous particles which could otherwise taint the liquid contents of the borehole.
Streams of crude oil descending into the depths of potable water wells are a major no-no, for they taint the liquid and render it detrimental to human consumption.
In potable water wells, the utilization of air-based drilling fluids is not recommended, since it can result in aerating the water, thereby making it taste unpleasant.
