water well drilling procedure
A drill rig is used to access subsurface groundwater by boring a hole into the earth’s surface and digging deep – this process is known as water well drilling. Depending on the yield of water required, that hole can stretch down several meters, or several thousand meters.
Crafting a water well requires expertise in a variety of components, including the rig, drill bit, hole depth, and rock formation. The most commonly employed unit for this work is a rotary rig that uses rotating drill bits to break through the stone. Depending on the underlying formation and digging depth, the proper drill bit must be chosen.
After the drilling process is complete, a casing is seamlessly threaded into the borehole. Performing as a pillar of support, the casing helps to prevent the hole from erosion or caving in, as well as providing an efficient means of extracting liquid from within.
Installing the casing is just the beginning. Afterward, a layer of gravel works to filter the water and also ensures the stability of the structure – preserving its integrity.
After gravel is placed into the opening, a filter is put in place on top, providing a passageway for liquid but impenetrable to sand and other foreign bodies. The mesh of the screen is constructed to capacitate only water, completely blocking solids from seeping through.
In the ultra-final stretch of well drilling, the reservoir within the hole is brought to life by the addition of a pump – this tool ensures that the liquid can be retrieved from underground and supplied with necessary pressure to meet the required needs of a water system.
