Extracting groundwater from the earth requires a method of drilling that can reliably reach powerful reserves of freshwater. A hole is delicately bored into the ground, reinforced with a specially designed casing to ensure stability and secure a long-lasting supply of water. Hand operations have been used in the past but today, more efficient methods involve the usage of powered drills and trucks to assist in water well drilling.

Unearthing the water table is the initial phase of well drilling. This is the level where the earth is saturated with water. To determine it, the simplest approach is to excavate a hole and measure the amount of water present. Generally, the water table sits 10-30 feet beneath ground level.

After pinpointing the location of the water table, the following course of action is to select a drill bit. Its type will determine the diameter of the borehole. Numerous variations exist, yet the most commonly opted-for option is a rotary bit. Composed of steel, this tool has an edged cutting region that is spun by an attached drill device. As it rotates, the bit chips away stone and dirt.

Water well drilling can often be done with a truck-mounted rig, which constitutes a truck outfitted with a platform that includes a derrick to support the drill pipe. The drill pipe is then inserted into the ground and rotated with the rig, sending a bit at its end down to the deepest depths for quick and efficient large hole drilling.

As the drill bit rotates and penetrates the rock and soil, a slurry pump is used to extract the cuttings from the borehole. This special kind of pump employs a stream of water to collect and transfer the material up to the surface.

After a hole is prepared, a steel or PVC casing is placed within its depths. This pipe-like barrier holds up the walls of the hole to ensure its shape remains intact. To ensure further reinforcement, cement is poured between the casing and the hole – solidifying upon contact to prevent any crumbling or collapse.

Once the cement is set, the drilling pipe is no longer necessary and the well has been finished. Boring for groundwater typically includes making an opening in the ground and outfitting it with an enclosure such as a pipe or encasement. Water well drilling is carried out in one of three ways – it can be done manually, using a driven-drill, or using a vehicle-stationed machine.
